Women's Institute

Colby & Banningham Women's Institute, or WI, is not all about 'Jam & Jerusalem'.

We are a small friendly group of ladies with no lower or upper age limit, that enjoy eachothers company and support and we like to have a little fun!

We invite a variety of speakers, that cover most topics you can think of.
For example - Equery to the Queen, who told us about his life in the Royal household, to baking with chocolate with ideas and samples.

We also organise the ocassional outing.

Come and meet us at the Jubilee Hall, Banningham on the second Wednesday of each month (except August) at 7.30pm.

In April we will celebrate our 97th Birthday.  This is how we celebrated our 90th Birthday...

2010 marked our 90th birthday, and to celebrate we held a series of special events throughout the year.

Colby & Banningham WI's 90th Birthday - April 2010

Colby & Banningham WI is 90!!  Not quite the oldest WI in the County, but well up the ranks of long-standing Institutes.

We said we would celebrate in style - and we did just that!  After almost 18 months of planning, Members, Past Presidents and Officers plus Sally Paramour and Cindy Brookes from the Norfolk Federation and six neighbouring WI's - and not forgetting our guest speaker for the evening, Keith Skipper - enjoyed a fantastic meal masterminded by our President, Sylvia Keeler (who also did a lot of the cooking) and prepared and served by our Members.

Ever renowned for its food and hospitality, Colby & Banningham excelled that evening - not only the food, the flowers were amazing, the hall looked stunning, as did the wonderful display of crafts and minute books, programmes etc from our Archive.

Guests were announced on arrival by our Master of Ceremonies, and served Pimms and canapes by our waiters (WI husbands in disguise!)  Supper was enthusiastically received, and enjoyed, following Grace said by our Rector.  Formalities continued with toasts to our Institute, our Guests and the Loyal Toast; our President and Sally Paramour cut the wonderful birthday cake - which was then served with coffee. To finish the evening Keith Skipper entertained us with his "Birthday Bouquet of Squit".
His anecdotes had everyone laughing, it was just right for the evening.

Washing up was left until the next morning.........but we all agreed it had been a wonderful evening, to be remembered for a long time.  Coral Batchelor, our WI Advisor, said.....shall I mark the 2nd Wednesday in 2020 for the 100th?!!   Does anyone know if a WI qualifies for a telegram from the Queen when reaching 100?   After all, she is a member........
